Problem recognising the sitemap file type

Postby modal2 » May 14th, 2009, 1:46 am

Hi there,

Totally newbie here, hence the problem (i guess). I singed up with your service, had my sitemap kindly prepared by you, tried to upload it myself (not automatically since I considered it to be easy stuff), but got the message from google webmaster tools "Incorrect file type" or so. Then I changed my FTP settings in my Automapit account and Im seeking for your kind assistance...... Id my obliged if you could both upload the sitemap properly but also explain to me what was my mistake.

Thank you in advance,

Themis

Hello Themis,

Google not recognizing the filetype is common if you use a program like FrontPage or other wysiwyg editor to upload the sitemap file. Some of these types of software will try to 'fix' the XML file and turn it into an HTML file... but this is not correct for the sitemap, so Google takes offense like you saw happen.

By setting up the automatic FTP, AutoMapIt can let the search engines know where your sitemap is and you can be sure they will be uploaded into the correct location, using the proper format.

I have re-published your sitemaps, now that you have your FTP info entered.
